How to make a vellum mat for your digital scrapbook page

Weeks ago, I shared layouts from JB Studio Creative Team using You’re Rad Collection. All the layouts are awesome, but there’s one that got people’s attention on Instagram.

jennifer

How cool is this layout!

I love the photos on this page, but something in special caught my attention. How she added a vellum mat to her background, it makes the layout interesting without looking busy. Her photos are full of colors and details and the artsy paper she used as the background would distract our eyes from them, so the vellum mat was the perfect solution for this awesome digital scrapbook page.

So, today I’m sharing a quick tutorial to show you how to create a vellum effect that can solve some design issues and add a special touch to your layouts.

How to make a vellum mat to your digital scrapbook page

P.S.: This tutorial is made using Photoshop CS3, but I believe the steps are the same for Photoshop Elements (PSE) and other versions of Photoshop.

Step 1 | Open the template or create a new 3600 x 3600 pixel file. I’m using the same template Jen used to make her page. When you’re using a template, remember to duplicate your image. You don’t want to mess up the original file, right?

vellum_01

Step 2 | Choose the patterned paper you want and clip to the proper layers. You will notice the spot for journaling is too hard to read because of the patterned paper. I chose the Hot Cocoa Collection to scrap my new habit of drinking tea.

vellum_02

Step 3 | I prefer to use a solid paper from the kit because it has texture. I resize it to the size I want. Hold the Shift key while resizing to make all sides even. I chose the lighter solid paper from the kit so it the page is coordinated.

If you prefer, you can create the mat using the rectangle tool. It is important to hold the Shift key to make it a square.

vellum_03

Step 4 | If you’re using the template, copy the drop shadow from a paper element to make all shadows look uniform, then paste it to the shape layer. If you’re creating a new layout on your own, add the shadow as you like.

vellum_04

Step 5 | To add the transparent look, change the fill rate until you like the way it looks. As I want to add journaling to my page, I made the fill 80%. If I was not going to add journaling, I would make it lower than 70% to show more of the patterned paper underneath it.

vellum_05

And it’s done. You can use the same technique and create any vellum elements or details to your layout. Have fun!

Creative Team Layouts | You’re Rad!

Hello, there!

I’m here with another round of creative team layouts. If you find yourself with a creative block or if you want to see how you can use products you bought, here’s your first stop for some scrapping inspiration.

Today, I’m sharing a collection of layouts made with You’re Rad! Collection that includes Full Kit, Flowers, Artsy Papers, Ombré Papers and  Stickers.

Of course, I am also sharing my thoughts and takeaways on each one. I hope you also get inspired to scrap your photos and memories.

alanna

Alanna scrapped this cute page with a templates from The Little Things 6 and I love how she added fewer flowers and more brushes. For a boyish look, using the neutrals with a bit of color was a great choice.

rabecca

Rabecca used a template from The Little Things 3 and I love how she changed it to fit her needs. She chose a B&W photo and it’s a perfect fit for the artsy paper she chose for the background because it is full of things to see and her photo doesn’t get lost that way.

heidi2

Heidi rocked my world with this layout. Love the picture and how it pops from all the elements and papers and artsy paper of the background, there’s so much going on here, but her photo is clean enough to not get lost. The wordart sticker was perfect for the photo. Love the layers of papers and elements, too.

sacha

I love those photos! They seem to have been taken by a professional in a studio and its good to make them the focus of the layout. I like the way this page reminds me a traditional paper page because of the classic placement of everything. I like that she didn’t add too many elements and let her photos be the star. I’m curious about her journaling, it’s sad I can’t read it. LOL

heidi

Heidi made another beautiful layout. I love the ombré background, they always add interest without the need of adding other things to capture the eyes’ attention. I love how she created the triangle shape with the title, the word art sticker and the banner, can you see it? This is a great design technique I love using.

kellie

Another page that reminds me a traditional paper page due to the way Kellie divided the page and used a large photo. I love patterned paper as background and using the arrows border to connect the patterns was a great touch. I like how the report card pops from the page because it is the focus, the photo is a complement. This is a great thing to celebrate, great choice of story to tell.

jennifer

Jennifer blew my mind!! Love those photos full of colors and how she made the page looks masculine with the blacks and blues. The vellum over the artsy paper was perfect to make the photos pop. This page makes me smile.

em

Em always does a great job with filling her page with lots of interesting things and still have the focus on the photo. I like that she chose a lighter paper as background so all the colors and the photo standout.

I love how Lynn captures her family everyday life with pocket pages every week. Click the images to enlarge them . What can I say, she always adds interest with small accents and word bits. Love that!

Creative Team Layouts | The Little Things Templates

Hello, there!

I’m here with another round of creative team layouts. If you find yourself with a creative block or if you want to see how you can use products you bought, here’s your first stop for some scrapping inspiration.

Today, I’m sharing a big collection of layouts made with The Little Things Templates sets Three, Four, Five and Six that are all bundled up in January Templates Bundle. Of course, I am also sharing my thoughts and takeaways on each one. I hope you also get inspired to scrap your photos and memories.

The Little Things is a series of minimalist templates full of empty space and small photos.

tltctlos1

Alanna made such a cute page. I love how the string waves, it gives such a charming touch to the layout. I love how she added very small elements keeping the layout very minimalist. The title with tiny letter blocks is such a cool thing! I like that she moved the original title place to fit her layout. The colors are also beautiful.

tltctlos15

I love the bold and dark layout with bits of light colors here and there. I know I’m the one who designed this kit, but I cannot resist saying I love the texture of that paper, I think it goes perfectly with the Winter theme.

tltctlos6

Robin did such a great work with this template. I love the colors and the cluster on the left edge of the photo. The light background is the perfect match for the bright colors.

tltctlos3

I love this background paper and the color combination. She placed a banner under the photo and decorative circles that added so much interested to the design. Great shadowing.

tltctlos14

Lisa made a great Christmas page. I like how she replaced the confetti by the Christmas lights. Love the Joy card with the hat on the corner. Great picture, too.

tltctlos4

Heidi used an ombré paper for the background and added only pattern paper to the small pieces of paper, leaving a lot of empty space, the ombré paper makes it look much more interesting than if she had used a plain paper. Look at those cute faces! I love how her photo pops from the layout. Everything looks adorable.

tltctlos10

Love the colors of this layout, too. I also love how she added paint splatters, that added a great touch.

tltctlos11

I like when people use templates as the starting point, but change it to fit their needs. Theresa rotated the template and then resized photos and pieces of paper, she left empty space, but it doesn’t look very minimalist. A good example of how you can use a template even when it doesn’t seem to be your style.

tltctlos12

What a sweet page by Rabecca. I love patterned papers as backgrounds. I like that she didn’t add many elements so it’s not too busy. Her photo is so adorable.

tltctlos8

I always love Alanna’s layouts, she knows how to combine papers and elements in a very pleasant way. The color combo is so adorable and I love all the doodles. That background with inked edges brought a bit of contrast. I also like the hearts doodles on the bottom.

tltctlos9

Theresa resized it all again to fit her style. The title is also cute and I like all the themed elements that go with it. Great photo.

tltctlos7

What a cool page by Jennifer. Love the male look. Love that she placed a vellum mat over the artsy paper, it made the layout less busy since her photos have lots of colors.

Creative Team Layouts: Catching Snowflakes

If you find yourself with a creative block or if you want to see how you can use products you bought, here’s your first stop for some scrapping inspiration.

Today, I’m sharing a collection of layouts made with Catching Snowflakes Digital Kit and a few of my thoughts and takeaways on each one. I hope you also get inspired to scrap your photos and memories.

cs-heidi

Heidi amazed me with this layout. I love how she used that large picture and didn’t add many elements so the focus is on the photos. Framing the small photo with a bold frame was the perfect choice to make it the focal point. Perfection!

cs-alane

I love how Alane matched the colors in her photo with the colors of the elements and used a solid light background to contrast. I also like how she placed the frame under the picture and the layers of elements over the photo add depth.

cs-rabecca

I love patterned papers as backgrounds, I think they give so much interest to a scrapbook page. When using a patterned background, it’s important that your photo is not busy nor dark, what makes this page perfect! The photo pops from the background. I also like that she resized the elements so they don’t take the focus off the photo.

cs-kellie

Kellie brought so much interest to her scrapbook page by adding the veneer snowflakes. I also love how she framed what is important on the photo. That heart inside on the O of her title is such a cute touch.

cs-em

I always like how Em’s pages remind me of traditional paper ones. I think it’s because of the family photos and how she keeps them large. The banner on the bottom of the photo is a great touch.

cs-jen

Jen’s photo is so cool! I love cropped shots. Besides that, the colors of her photos give the tone for the whole layout. I love all those layers of papers and flowers and her shadowing is perfect.

cs-sacha

Another large photo and it’s also beautiful! The flowers are pink and it’s not a color you can find in the kit, but the tone matched the papers and elements and the glitter on the elements match the snow on the flowers. Love it.

cs-rabecca2

I love how Rabecca used a patterned paper on the left side and all the details that go from bottom to top. The babies are cute and I love the journaling, what a cute memory to keep.

cs-cindy

What a beautiful scrapbook page by Cindy. Love that snowflake cut out, I like all the details and how the elements and photos create a triangle shape (always a good design).

cs-sheri

Sheri’s photo is adorable and fit perfectly on the circle shape. She added snowflakes and other elements on the dark brush and made it so interesting. I love her title, too.

cs-tinci

Tinci always amazes me with her layers of papers and clusters. These photos matched the kit colors perfectly.

cs-robin

Robin chose the perfect photos for this scrapbook page. I love the big circles and clusters. Everything about this page is so beautiful.

Throw Back Thursday #4

Hello Thursday! The day to remember something from our past. Today, I’m sharing a memory from a year ago. I wanted to get in the mood for Christmas, so I opened the December 2015 folder of photos and I had so much fun looking at the photos. I didn’t remember how fun last Christmas was.

I wish I could scrap all the photos, but as I only had time to make one page. I chose this photo of myself being silly to scrap about me decorating the house for Christmas for the first time last year. It was so cool create my own DIY decorative items and buy some stuff.

tbt_4

The most interesting thing was that I had fun with the collection I used also. When I opened the folder and browsed for elements and papers and journal cards, I remembered things I was learning and did for this collection and the feeling of pride came back to me. I feel so good when I’m learning new things. This is an incredible collection and I admit I had forgotten about it.

Here’s the TBT special for this week. Save $6 when you purchase the bundled collection or save $4 when you purchase more than $10 in individual packs. Get the coupons and links below.
