New Year for a Better Me – 7 Days of Review | Day Five

Lisa Jacobs hosts a seven-day review series* on Marketing Creativity. This review process is derived from her book – Your Best Year 2017 – which I bought as soon as she launched after using the previous edition which I loved. The 2017 edition is even better than the previous one and I truly recommend using it if you are running a creative business online.

I responded to the prompts in a self-paced way back in November. I’m glad Lisa is careful enough to add her own responses as examples in the book, it helped a lot. As I decided to share my goals for this year here on the blog, instead of writing a post with my resolutions I thought it would be a good idea to share my whole review with you, following Lisa’s series.

As I said before, it’s a seven-day review and I am writing seven posts however, they won’t be posted daily, I am posting them as soon as I write. If you haven’t set your goals yet, I hope that seeing my answers or visiting Lisa’s blog and seeing her answers might help you set your goals.

Today, we’re going to talk time. Lisa suggests we start thinking about time as a precious, non-renewable commodity. She says time is the most precious resource we have on Earth. Know the value in each of your 24 hours every day. 

I admit that I have good weeks, I feel pretty productive and don’t waste time on things that are irrelevant. But there are weeks that I slow down a bit, I feel a bit distracted and end up doing fewer things, but I’m always making progress. This is how things work for me, this is my natural flow. I usually need to slow down in some weeks so I don’t get burnt out. Here are my answers.

Choose a direction 2017

What are your main priorities in life (i.e., family, profession, marriage, personal wellbeing, etc.)? List them in order of importance.

  1. Career
  2. Money
  3. Family / Home*
  4. Personal wellbeing and health

Last year, I focused a lot on my family and my own wellbeing. I had therapy sessions, my daughter had therapy sessions and it improved our communication in a big way. We scheduled frequent outings without our daughter so we could have some time alone to refine our dialogue and plans and stay in sync. We spent quality time together, we became closer as a family. We also became closer to my parents. I spent more time with my little sister, too. We started going to a gypsy temple and learned some energy rituals that changed us in so many ways. Last year I was very focused on myself and people I love.

This year, everything is flowing in that area and I wanna focus on my career and money more than anything. I have other things I wanna improve on in the other areas, but these are my two top priorities in the first semester.

*I merge family and home in the same category and I also think about my marriage when I refer to the family because I think everything here is connected. If my marriage is not doing well, it influences our relationship with our daughter and it reflects in our house and vice-versa. I usually spread my dedication and time to them in the same proportion. However, if you have a tendency to focus more on one area than the others, it is better to separate them in topics. You always have to make things work for you.

Confession time: I don’t have a very typical routine. I usually go with the flow, if I feel more energized in the morning, I work more in the morning. If I’m feeling a bit distracted or tired, I spend more time doing things that make me feel good. Besides that, sometimes I have appointments or errands to run and then my schedule changes completely.

Does your time chart (where you’re spending your hours) reflect the priorities you listed in question 1, and in the correct order?

Maybe, it is time for me to crave for more structure. I guess I’m afraid of feeling trapped in a strict schedule. I have to experiment and see what works best for me, right?

How might you rearrange your schedule for better results?

I’ll set up a schedule for the first time and I’ll experiment and adjust it as needed. I’ll share it weekly on Instagram in February as a way of being accountable.

And here’s day four of the review. This planning system by Lisa is very detailed and some parts are comfortable and others may take me out of my comfort zone, this is a great thing because we must get out of our comfort zone to make changes. I’ll be posting day 6 with a new list of prompts + my answers. We will talk real specific goals. I’m feeling Yay! and Eeek! about it because sharing it on the blog is committing publicly to those goals.

P.S.: When you only feel excited, it may not offer any challenges and you’ll likely feel unmotivated to take action. If you only feel fear, it will get you stuck and you won’t take action either. That means excitement and butterflies in the stomach is the perfect combination of a goal.

*Lisa’s series is called New Year For A New You, however I don’t like the idea of thinking of me as a new person, I’m always looking for becoming a better version of myself, opening up for my core values and truth. That’s why I changed the name for New Year For A Better Me.
